Endometriosis is the abnormal growth of
cells form the lining of the uterus to be found outside the uterus.
Endometriosis typically affects women during their reproductive years.
It is estimated to affect 6% to 12% of women. It is one of the most common
cause leads to infertility. Estimates suggest that among 20% to 50% women with endometriosis
being treated for infertility, and up to 80% of women with chronic pelvic pain
may be affected.
Patients with endometriosis normally don’t have symptoms, of those who
do have symptoms, they may experience pelvic pain. The pain can range from mild
to severe. The amount of pain relates poorly with the extent of condition.
Those who experience mild pain may have an extensive endometriosis, while
others may experience sever pain with a small area of endometriosis.
Most of women diagnosed as endometriosis aged from 25 to 35.
Endometriosis is also reported in teenage. Endometriosis is rare in
postmenopausal women. Prevalence of the disease varies racially. It is more
common found in white women as compared with African American and Asian women.
Studies further suggest that endometriosis is more common in taller, thin women
with a low body mass index. Delaying pregnancy until an older age is also
believed to increase the risk of developing endometriosis. It also is likely
that there are genetic factors that cause a woman to develop endometriosis,
since having a first-degree relative with the condition increases the chance
that a woman will develop the condition.
